Catches Win Matches

As a naive young kid taking up the game I used to hate my cricket coaches constantly repeating the old adage that “Catches Win Matches”. However, it did not take away the cold facts of its importance. When you think of cricketers vying to keep hold of their places the most common indicators are their figures. If a batsman is not averaging 40 in a series he’s in trouble. Likewise if a bowler’s average is much above 30 it might be goodnight sweetheart.  But the art – yes art – of fielding cannot be overlooked.

How many times do batsman get dropped on 13 and then go on to make a ton? How many times has a catch or superb bit of fielding changed the course of events?

Having a Paul Collingwood, Jonty Rhodes or Ricky Ponting at point will sure make the batsman think twice before pinching a sneaky single.
