ICC ODI Rankings – Australia Fail to Reclaim Number One Spot

0 Comments 02 February 2009

Australia had to overcome arch rivals and relative minnows New Zealand to take back their one day crown. However they looked a team short of confidence without that usual swaggerthat’s got them so far. Australia failed to impose themselves on a youthful Kiwi outfit that recorded a 2 wicket victory only setting a measly target of 182.

The Kiwis were made to sweat for it and Daniel Vettori sealed the victory with a boundary from the last ball following a hard fought 64 from Ross Taylor.

There was a bit of drama in the aftermath as Vettori accusing Brad Haddin of cheating as he appeared to dislodge the bails taking the ball in front of the stumps dismissing Broom off the bowling of Michael Clarke.

The rest of the series is likely to be harder fought than any Aussie cricket fan could imagine as the selectors have decided to rest captain Ricky Ponting for the next 2 games. Vice captain will take over the reins and hopefully transform the Aussie fortunes.
