During the summer, it seemed like the Australian selectors were picking their batting order blindfolded. A quick look at day 2 of the Pakistan vs South Africa 1st Test illustrates how this fickle policy can actually pay off.
Pakistan fielded their 6th different opening partnership in 7 Tests. Having dismissed South Africa for 249 in their first innings, Shan Masood and Khurram Manzoor repaid the faith showed in them by both recording fifties and scoring Pakistan’s 1st century opening partnership stand in 22 innings.
The beauty of Pakistan as always is they can capitulate to a minnow like Zimbabwe one week, and then give world beaters like South Africa a massive fright the next. Keep an eye on Abu Dhabi. Should Pakistan record a decent first innings lead, South Africa will have to contend with the most dangerous spinner in the world to preserve their record at #1.
